One of the oldest cities in the United States, Richmond is the capital of Virginia with a storied history.Patrick Henry's famous "give me liberty or give me death" speech was delivered at St. John's Church in Richmond. The city's location on the James River has helped it to prosper and become the law and financial hub it is today.
Richmond is home to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. On top of that, the city has offices for a few major financial corporations, including Capital One, Genworth Finance, and Philip Morris USA. Richmond also has four of the largest law firms in the United States, Hunton & Williams, McGuireWoods, Williams Mullen, and LeClairRyan. The Martin Agency, an award winning advertising agency, is also based out of Richmond. The Virginia BioTechnology Research Park that opened in 1995 houses The United Network for Organ Sharing, which manages the nation's organ transplant waitlist.
Richmond is full of monuments, museums, performing centers, and parks. Monument Avenue has six different monuments on it, including the Robert E. Lee Monument. Since the majority of Richmond's larger museums are located near the Boulevard, it is sometimes referred to as the Museum District. A few museums in this area are the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Science Museum of Virginia. The Richmond CenterStage is a new performing arts center in downtown Richmond that was built in 2009.
Several institutions of higher learning are in Richmond, including the Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, Virginia Union University, Virginia College, and numerous community colleges. The city is served by the Richmond International Airport.
