Fort Worth joins with its larger neighbor to form the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex, one of the nation’s biggest population centers and an economic hub for Texas and the entire region. The city was founded as a military outpost in 1849 and quickly became a cattle boom town during the days of the Wild West. Today, Fort Worth boasts a population of nearly 800,000 that ranks it just behind Dallas among cities in the Metroplex.
Thanks to a number of world-class museums and regional attractions, Fort Worth is considered the cultural gateway to the American West. Foremost among the city’s gems is the Kimbrell Art Museum, which features the greatest collection of art in the state and is housed in a modern architectural landmark. The Amon Carter Museum also has a distinguished collection of American art. For a connection to the city’s Wild West past, the Fort Worth Stockyards offers visitors a district of restored buildings with museums, shops and restaurants.
Fort Worth is served by four major interstates that connect it to Dallas and the rest of Texas, and features a citywide arterial grid of streets. The third-busiest airport in the world, Dallas/Forth Worth International, is located roughly halfway between the two citie. A newly constructed commuter rail line gives tourists and residents alike an easy connection between Fort Worth and downtown Dallas.
