Corpus Christi is Latin for Body of Christ, and was named by a Spanish explorer who discovered the city on the feast day celebrating the body of Christ. This coastal city is home to the fifth largest port in America, though the Port of Corpus Christi operates completely separately from the city and receives no government funding.
Most of the local economy is sustained by tourism and the oil and petrotechnics industry. One of the large attractions for both tourists and locals is North Beach, where the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington are located. Near the USS Lexington is the Corpus Christi museum district. The Museum of Asian Cultures, the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the Harbor Playhouse Theater and the South Texas Institute for the Arts are all located in this district.
Multiple movies have been filmed in Corpus Christi, including Pearl Harbor, Selena, and The Open Road. The city is also the hometown of famous actress Eva Longoria and Grammy winning singer/songwriter Selena, who the movie Selena was based on.
There are several institutions of higher education in Corpus Christi including Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, Del Mar College, and Saint Leo University - Corpus Christi. The city is served by the Corpus Christi International Airport and the Union Pacific Railroad. Corpus Christi is also accessible by two bridges, the Harbor Bridge and the John F. Kennedy Causeway. The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority provides 28 bus routes throughout the city.
