Enter the Chevrolet Astro van. When it comes to cargo capacity, trailering capability and eight passenger seating, the Astro is unmatched in its market segment.
Built exclusively in Baltimore, Md., by General Motors, the rear-drive Chevrolet Astro van is available in LS and LT trim and two-wheel or all-wheel drive. The automaker also offers a cargo version of this van for commercial applications.
Introduced in 1985 as a "midsize" alternative to minivans, its rugged yet contemporary styling sets it apart from the "ordinary" minivan offerings. Unibody construction, featuring an integral steel front sub frame and partial front-ladder type frame incorporated with the floor panels give the Astro chassis added strength.
Refinements for 2002 include multi-port fuel injection added to the powerful Vortec 4.3L V-6 engine for smoother engine operation. Mated to the silky smooth 4L60-E four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive, the Astro is popular with recreationally active motorists.
The available all-wheel drive system is designed to operate in two-wheel drive until it senses rear-wheel slippage, at which time it automatically transfers torque to the front axle to help regain traction. On the road, the large six-cylinder engine shows its mettle, with responsive acceleration and good handling. A tow/haul switch at the end of the gear selector enables the driver to hold the transmission in a lower gear if needed for better power management -- a benefit when towing.
Inside the cabin, the driver enjoys a commanding view of the road. Displays and controls are driver-friendly and convenient to use. All cupholders are industrial sized -- able to handle the largest coffee mugs. A large storage bin located at floor level in the center of the dash does duty as the glove box.
Despite the lack of dual sliding doors, entry and exit is facilitated by hand grips at the doors and the front passenger dashboard. Seating is roomy and comfortable. Even the third row bench seat will allow several adults to enjoy an extended trip.
This van is about storage. Many places to stow stuff! If the family likes to take things each time they travel -- across town or across the country, they will appreciate the Astro van. As far as cargo carrying ability the Astro has a maximum cargo volume of 170.4 cu. ft., with the second and third seats removed.
Ratings & specifications
Engine performance numbers for the Vortec 4300 V6 are 190 hp at 4,400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 rpm. EPA fuel economy figures are 16 city/20 highway for two-wheel drive and 15 city/19 highway for the all-wheel drive model using regular unleaded gasoline. Underhood fluids are easy to reach and very clearly marked. Properly equipped, the Chevrolet Astro passenger van has a maximum payload of 1,764 pounds and a towing capacity of 5,500 pounds.
Standard safety/security features include dual front airbags, battery-rundown protection, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, daytime running lamps, lockout protection, PassLock theft-deterrent system, remote keyless entry and side-door beams. A locking differential is a $252 option.
The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Chevrolet Astro passenger van starts at $23,761 for two-wheel drive and $25,576 for all-wheel drive. Destination charge adds $655. Chevrolet is offering customer cash of $500 up to $1,000 that ends Jan. 15, 2002. The automaker reports decent supplies.
