Technological Flagship: 2017 Volvo S90 sedan
Volvo Cars has introduced the highly-anticipated Volvo S90 luxury sedan on the heels of the company’s award-winning Volvo XC90 SUV. The all-new 2017 Volvo S90 sedan is a bold entry into the luxury sedan market and sets a new standard with superior materials, technology, comfort and class-leading semi-autonomous features.
The Volvo S90 combines Scandinavian design with cutting-edge safety and cloud-based applications and services. The interior makes use of the Sensus Connect touch screen that debuted in the XC90, providing a clutter-free interior with minimal dashboard buttons. The Volvo S90 introduces another step toward Volvo’s Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020, through world first safety technologies and highly advanced semi-autonomous features.
The S90’s proud yet non-aggressive face is characterized by a concave grille, itself a homage to the Volvo P1800 and is home to Volvo’s new Iron Mark. The T-shaped Thor’s Hammer lights deliver a powerful sense of direction that makes the S90 unmistakable on the road.
Offered in Momentum and Inception trim levels, power is generated by a choice of two variants of the automaker’s 2.0L four-cylinder engine: the turbocharged T5 and the turbocharged and supercharged T6. Torque is communicated to the wheels for both engines through an AW TG-81SC eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is also available.
Designed and engineered from the ground up, the S90 sedan is the second vehicle built on the Swedish car company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), sharing this platform with the recently introduced XC90 SUV.
Inside the passenger cabin of this low, wide sedan, Volvo has taken cues from the success of its XC90 model and raised the bar with some stunning details on the new dashboard and instrument panel, including new air blades that stand vertically on each side of the Sensus user interface.
“We created our new flagship sedan, the Volvo S90, as a real game changer. It is classy and cool. The exterior is exceptionally well surfaced with a fantastic stance and the sort of clean lines that are singularly appropriate of a Scandinavian design. The interior masters the art of blending innovative technology and natural materials into an elegant, welcoming and tasteful ambience, Swedishness at its best,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group.
