The city of Minneapolis is divided in half by the Mississippi River and is the largest city in Minnesota. Minneapolis connects to the state capital, Saint Paul, to create a large metropolitan area known as the Twin Cities. The University of Minnesota is one of the many colleges located in Minneapolis and is the fourth largest four-year public university in the United States. The University of Minnesota is also one of the largest employers in the city.
The Minneapolis park system has been credited as one of the best in America with 16.6% of the city's land dedicated to parks. The city has an abundance of water with twenty lakes and wetlands in addition to the Mississippi River. The Chain of Lakes connects seven lakes and the Minnehaha Creek with trails for biking, running, and walking. Minneapolis also hosts two large marathons annually, the Twin Cities Marathon and the Minneapolis Marathon.
