Ray Charles may have Georgia on his mind, but his birthplace will still always be this proud Florida city. Tampa is in the middle of Florida, on the Gulf Coast of the state. Tampa has a very warm coastal climate. It fluctuates between highs of 90 degrees during the summer and lows of 50 degrees during the winter. Though the city has over one hundred rainy days each year, it still experiences 60% or more of its possible sunshine most months. This temperate climate combined with the wealth of activities and events around the town, have earned Tampa several notable awards in the last several years. Forbes, in 2008, ranked the city the 5th best outdoor city; Pew Research Center rated the city the 5th most popular in the country in 2009; and the Washington Square News in 2004 called it the top city for "twenty-somethings."
The city has a wide range of economic activities, including finance, healthcare, shipping, and real estate. Two of the top three, and five of the top ten, largest employers in the city are in the healthcare industry, with BayCare Health System employing almost 20,000 people on its own. The port at Tampa is Florida's largest and the nation's seventh-largest, while the MacDill Air Force Base hosts over 15,000 active military members. Additionally, the city is home to Wikipedia's server farms.
Professional sports are a major pastime in the city. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Tampa Bay Lightning represent the NFL, MLB, and NHL, respectively. Each team has played once in its respective championship series since 2000, with the Buccaneers winning the Super Bowl in 2002 and the Lightning winning the Stanley Cup in 2004. Additionally, four Super Bowls have been hosted in the city, most recently in 2009.
