"People, Pride, and Progress" is the motto for this proud California city. Moreno Valley is an extremely young city: census data for the town only dates back as far as 1990. However, its history does extend beyond that decade. With over 190 prehistoric archaeological sites in the city, there is evidence to suggest that people were living in the area as far back as 2,300 years ago. Following California's admission to the U.S. in 1850, Moreno Valley became a rapidly growing city. Unfortunately, a dispute over water rights with the city of Redlands led most inhabitants of Moreno Valley to dissipate elsewhere. The city experienced a revival following the construction of March Field by the United States Air Force in 1918, then by the construction of the Riverside International Raceway in the mid 1950s, which remained an active NASCAR site until 1989. The climate in Moreno Valley is very warm. With less than a hundred degree difference between the record high and record low, Moreno Valley doesn't experience much climate variation. Average highs in the summer climb to the mid-90s and average lows in the winter rarely drop below 42 degrees. Though it receives some rainfall in the winter, Moreno Valley's average annual precipitation is only just over a foot.
Economic booms and busts have rendered Moreno Valley's population very volatile. Though there are 75,000 more people living in the city according to the latest census as there were in 1990, this does not really reflect the economic busts of 1992 and 2008, which had important effects on the economy and population. The March Air Reserve Base remains the largest employer in the city with 9,000+ employees. The Moreno Valley Unified School District and Riverside County Regional Medical Center are the next two highest employers with 3,752 and 2,215 employees respectively.
The education system in Moreno Valley provides for almost 50,000 students across two districts: Moreno Valley Unified School District and Val Verde Unified School district. These two districts operate close to 50 schools total.
