Located on California's southern coast, Long Beach is the seventh largest city in the Golden State. Surfing is said to have gotten its start in California in 1911 when two surfers came from Hawaii to Long Beach. However, due to a long breakwater that was built in 1949 to protect the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the surf waves in Long Beach have since been reduced to calm laps on the beach. The city is now known for its Grand Prix, which is the longest "street" race in North America, the marathon held in October, and its year round beautiful weather.
The Port of Long Beach is one of the busiest in the country and a main gateway for United States trade with Asia. Connected to the Los Angeles Port, this hub generates billions in trade and creates over 300,000 jobs for Southern Californians. The Long Beach Unified School District serves as the largest employer for the Long Beach area.
California State University, Long Beach is one of the largest universities in California with 35,000 students. Also located in Long Beach are Long Beach City College, DeVry University, and Pacific Coast University of Law.
